Catfish Jumbo - Dutch Clarias.

Catfish Jumbo are the largest young catfish sold for stocking, about 13–15 cm or more, usually of the African catfish species (Clarias gariepinus), which is widely farmed across Nigeria. Catfish is highly demanded for food due to its taste, nutritional value, and commercial importance. Our Dutch Clarias jumbo are produced in hatcheries through artificial breeding and raised to this stage before sale to fish farmers for stocking ponds, tanks, and other fish-rearing systems. Prices vary according to size, quality, location, and availability.

Jumbo size gives farmers a head start: the fish are strong, survive transport well, and reach table size in a shorter time than smaller stock. They are ideal for farmers who want a quicker turnover or who are restocking mid-season. Good-quality jumbo fish should be active, free from injuries, and relatively uniform in size. With proper feeding, clean water, and suitable stocking densities, they grow quickly to market size.

Key features

  • Species: Mostly African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), known for its hardiness and adaptability.
  • Size: Jumbo fish are about 13–15 cm or more (roughly 20–50 g), although sizes vary by hatchery and growth stage.
  • Appearance: Usually dark grey, brown, or black, with smooth, scaleless skin and whisker-like barbels around the mouth.
  • Adaptability: Can survive in a range of freshwater conditions and tolerate relatively low dissolved oxygen better than many other farmed fish.
  • Fast growth: Grow quickly under suitable conditions, with good feeding and water management.
  • High market demand: Catfish is widely consumed in Nigeria, creating opportunities for fish farmers.
  • Feeding habits: Omnivorous, feeding well on protein-rich pelleted feed.
  • Commercial value: Suitable for pond, concrete tank, tarpaulin tank, and other appropriate aquaculture systems; shorter time to market.

Care and Maintenance

  • Choose healthy jumbo fish: Buy from reputable hatcheries. Select active fish with no visible injuries and relatively uniform sizes.
  • Prepare the pond or tank: Clean the rearing unit and ensure it is free from harmful chemicals and contaminants before stocking.
  • Maintain water quality: Keep the water clean, monitor temperature and pH, and remove excess waste and uneaten feed. A pH of approximately 6.5–8.0 is generally suitable.
  • Provide adequate oxygen: Use aeration where necessary, especially in tanks with high stocking densities.
  • Feed properly: Use quality floating catfish feed of about 2–3 mm with around 40% protein. Feed 2 times daily according to fish size and appetite.
  • Avoid overfeeding: Excess feed pollutes the water and can cause disease and mortality.
  • Stock at an appropriate density: Larger fish need more space and oxygen; avoid overcrowding and adjust stocking to tank size, water exchange, and aeration.
  • Grade by size: Separate larger and smaller fish regularly to reduce competition and cannibalism.
  • Acclimatize before stocking: Gradually adjust the jumbo fish to the new water temperature and conditions before releasing them into the pond or tank.
  • Monitor fish daily: Watch for poor appetite, unusual swimming, injuries, or sudden deaths, and seek aquaculture or veterinary advice if problems occur.
  • Protect against predators: Use appropriate covers, screens, or fencing to prevent losses from birds, frogs, and other predators.
  • Keep records: Record feeding, mortality, growth, water quality, and other management activities to track performance.

Important tip: Jumbo fish need more oxygen and produce more waste. Change or top up water regularly and watch for crowding at the surface, which is a sign of low oxygen.
